Kaketoe
De kaketoe is een vogel in de familie van de papegaaiachtigen. In het Maleis betekent deze naam “nijptang”, gebaseerd op hun kromme snavel. Ze komen voor op de Filippijnen, Australië, de Solomon-eilanden en op Indonesië. Ze worden al heel lang gehouden door mensen, er gaat zelfs een gerust dat ze door de oude Grieken zelfs al als huisdier gehouden werden.
Herkenningspunten
Ze hebben enorm veel weg van papegaaien, zoals hun snavel. Deze is gebogen. Ook zijn twee tenen op de voeten voorwaarts gericht en twee achterwaarts. Papegaaien hebben dit ook. Ook hebben de kaketoes een mooie grote kuif die ze op kunnen zetten. Deze kuif heeft vaak een andere kleur dan het lichaam. De kleur van de vogels verschilt wel. Er zijn verschillende typen.
In een volière
De kaketoe kan prima in een volière, maar je dient wel met meerdere dingen rekening te houden. Deze vogel kan behoorlijk hard schreeuwen en maken enorm veel rommel. Ze gooien hun voedsel werkelijk overal heen. In een volière of in een kooi kunnen ze enorm oud worden. Soms zelfs ouder dan een mens. Ook is het onderhouden van deze vogel erg duur, het voedsel en de speeltjes kosten veel en worden ook regelmatig vernield. Toch dien je deze wel op te nemen, ze houden hier namelijk enorm van. De vogels hechten zich enorm aan mensen, geef ze dus voldoende aandacht. Ook kunnen deze vogels enorm krijsen. Houd hier goed rekening mee als je deze vogel aanschaft. Het is niet aan te raden ze met andere vogels te houden. Ze kunnen wel overleven in het Nederlandse klimaat, zorg er alleen wel voor dat er een vorst- en tochtvrij binnenhok beschikbaar is, zodat ze zich altijd terug kunnen trekken.
Voedsel kaketoe
Als hoofdvoedsel kun je de kaketoes gerust een zaadmengsel of kaketoe pellets geven. Deze zijn volop op het internet beschikbaar en ook in de fysieke winkel. Papegaaienvoer smullen ze ook van, geef ze tevens niet teveel pinda’s en noten. Dit is te vet voor de vogels en bovendien niet gezond. Geef ze geen mais. Deze mooie vogels houden ook van groente en fruit. Geef ze iedere dag minstens een stuk groente of fruit. De totale hoofdvoeding moet ongeveer 50/50 zijn. 50 procent moet dus groente/fruit zijn en 50 procent moeten zaden zijn.
Herkennen man/vrouw
De mannetjes en vrouwtjes lijken enorm op elkaar. In de meeste gevallen kun je het onderscheid niet eens zien. Slechts bij enkele soorten zijn de ogen van het popje licht van kleur en die van het mannetje donker. Een DNA-test is vaak de enige manier om erachter te komen of het een man of pop betreft.
Kweken
Het kweken van de kaketoe is enorm lastig. Ze zijn pas na een aantal jaren geslachtsrijp. Ze leggen hun eieren in een grote nestkast en doen dit gemiddeld een maand lang. Dit verschilt per type. Het koppeltje blijft voor altijd bij elkaar.

Denk goed na voordat je een kaketoe aanschaft, ze hebben enorm veel aandacht nodig, zijn duur en kunnen ouder dan jij worden.
